About Koalas

Koalas are native to Australia. They are not bears, even though some people sometimes call them "Koala Bears".

They spend most of their time up in trees. They also eat Eucalyptus Leaves, which gives them all the food and water they need.

They eat lots of Eucalyptus Leaves everyday but they don't give koalas enery. That's why they sleep 18-22 hours a day.

Why Are Koalas Endangered?

KOALAS NEED OUR HELP!

One reason koalas are currently endangered is because humans are cutting down trees, destroying their habitat.

Another reason that koalas are endangered is because of Wildfires.

During Australia's Black summer, many animals died, including countless koalas.

60,000 koalas were impacted by the bushfire crisis.

Currently there is an estimated amount of between 95,000 and 238,000 koalas left in 2024. They are endangered and this is why they need our help!

Climate change is warming our world and harming our habitats – increasing the frequency and severity of bushfires, fuelling drought and extreme weather events, this is a threat to humans, but koalas as well.

We want more people to be aware of these situations and are looking for help to support the, now-endangered, koalas.

BUT HOW CAN WE HELP? Read on to find out.

Koala-Helping Organization: What Do They Do?

#1: Koala Hospital Port Macquarie

This is a not-for-profit organization.

As stated in the article, "In 2022, the Koala was offically listed as an endangered species. Unfortunately, this listing was completely preventable. Recent studies indicate the koala will become extinct in New South Wales before 2050 – unless rapid and effective action is taken. Our Koala population face several threats:"

"Loss of Habitat"

Deforestation, urbanization, bush fires, and development have reduced koalas' habitats.

"Disease"

Koalas in the wild often die from diseases like chlamydiosis if not diagnosed and treated properly.

"Injury and Attack"

Due to shrinking habitats, koalas often face injury or death from cars and dog attacks.

This organization takes care of koalas, and when they're ready to go back into the wild, they release them.

#3. Something else we can do to help koalas is by PLANTING native trees to help Koalas. This helps koalas because "planting native plants by the river helps koalas by keeping weeds away and getting rid of places pests can hide.
